PPD and Skawplast Enter Strategic Partnership on Danish-Produced Plastic Ammunition Boxes – Strengthening NATO Supply Security

PPD and Skawplast Enter Strategic Partnership
PPD ApS and Skawplast A/S have entered into a strategic partnership for the production of the Danish-developed LWAC® M2A1 box – a lightweight plastic ammunition container already in operational service with the Danish Army. The collaboration ensures that production will take place 100% within Denmark and NATO borders, while also strengthening the defense industry in Northern Jutland.
Danish Development, Danish Production – Global Application
The LWAC® M2A1 was developed in Denmark. It is the result of an extensive development effort that included the DKK 273 million offset agreement between NAMMO and PPD in 2013, aimed at strengthening Danish innovation and introducing the next generation of packaging solutions for small-caliber ammunition and explosives.
Today, the product is sold globally and is used by several major international defense suppliers. The box has already proven its value in war zones under extreme conditions.
The LWAC® Advantage
PPD’s LWAC® M2A1 weighs 69% less than the traditional steel ammunition box. This provides significant weight advantages for soldiers in the field, major logistical optimizations in supply operations, improved efficiency in drone resupply, extended operational time for vehicles and helicopters, and reduced radar and noise signatures. Compared with the traditional steel box, the CO2 footprint is 66% lower.
Supply Security and NATO Control
In a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty, local production of critical components represents a strategic advantage. By placing production at Skawplast in Skagen, the partnership achieves:
- Full supply control within the NATO region
- Elimination of risks associated with production in the Far East
- Faster response times and high delivery reliability
- Direct strengthening of the defense industry in Skagen/Frederikshavn, Northern Jutland, and Denmark
Danish production also supports the needs of both national and NATO allies for stable European suppliers.
ESG and Responsible Value Chain
The collaboration includes a strong ESG profile with focus on:
- Environment: shorter transport distances, lower CO2 footprint, and opportunities for sustainable material solutions
- Social responsibility: use of local partners, including social enterprises and workshops
- Governance: full transparency and documentation throughout the production process
Having the entire production chain located in Denmark makes the process traceable, responsible, and resilient.
Strengthening Danish Industry, Jobs, and Exports
The new agreement will create jobs in Northern Jutland, support Danish exports, and reinforce Denmark’s position as an innovative supplier to the international defense market.
