Innovating Defence Logistics Through Lightweight Ammunition Case Technology

PPD’s LWAC (Lightweight Ammunition Cases) already reduce weight by approximately 65–70% compared with traditional steel ammunition cases, providing substantial benefits in military logistics and transportation.

With the newly awarded MADE Innovation Project, DOPLA-PRO, we are now taking the next step by combining advanced product development, digital simulation,
and innovative manufacturing technologies to further strengthen our lightweight ammunition case platform.

Driving the next generation of lightweight ammunition cases

The objective of the project is to combine innovative product design, advanced digital simulation and state-of-the-art manufacturing technology to further strengthen the performance and competitiveness of our lightweight ammunition cases.
A key focus of the project is the development of a new single-piece injection-moulded lid, replacing the current two-component solution used on selected ammunition cases.
This innovation is expected to simplify manufacturing, improve production efficiency and further strengthen product quality.

Digital engineering for faster innovation

Another important element of DOPLA-PRO is the development of a dedicated simulation application based on advanced numerical modelling.

The new application will significantly enhance PPD’s digital engineering capabilities by enabling virtual validation of new product designs before investments are made in tooling and physical testing.

This will accelerate future product development, reduce development risks and provide even stronger documentation of product performance.

Strong collaboration across the value chain

The project brings together highly specialised partners with complementary expertise:

  • PPD ApS – Product owner and project leader
  • Danish Technological Institute – Simulation, material characterisation and digital application development
  • AM Tooling – Tool design and optimisation
  • Schoeller Plast Enterprise – Industrial production and manufacturing expertise

This close collaboration ensures that new ideas can quickly be transformed into efficient and manufacturable solutions.

Supporting the future of defence logistics

PPD’s lightweight ammunition cases already provide significant advantages compared with conventional steel containers, including substantially lower weight, reduced CO₂ emissions during transportation and improved logistics efficiency while meeting demanding military requirements.

With DOPLA-PRO, we are taking the next step in strengthening our technology platform and digital development capabilities to support future defence programmes and industrial production.

The project will run until April 2027, and we look forward to sharing news and milestones as the project progresses.
